Our Story
Our practice was started in 1950 by Dr. Nix’s grandfather, Dr. Roy G. Davidson, Jr. Following WWII and time as a POW, Dr. Davidson returned to Birmingham and married the beautiful Betty Jo Travis. He had decided during the war that he wanted to attend dental school and completed his undergraduate requirements for dental school at Howard College. At this time, Alabama did not have a dental school, so Dr. Davidson attended the University of Tennessee Dental School in Memphis, TN. Upon graduation, they returned to Birmingham and Dr. Davidson opened his first practice in Edgewood in 1950. He relocated to a new office on Montgomery Highway in Homewood in 1961, where the practice remained until October 2007.
In 1990, Dr. Jennifer Davis joined her father in practice. They practiced together for seven years, and after forty-seven years of practice, Dr. Davidson retired in 1997. Prior to dental school, Dr. Davis was a registered nurse at Children’s Hospital and taught nursing school. Dr. Davis ran a solo practice until June 2007 when her niece, Dr. Melissa Nix joined her. They relocated to a new office in Homewood in October 2007 and later to our current office in Vestavia in 2021.
After years of loyal service to her patients, Dr. Davis retired in 2021. Dr. Nix still follows the same method of practicing dentistry that was established by Dr. Davidson - use the golden rule. We strive to treat each patient the way we would want to be treated if we were the patient instead of the dentist. We want to provide the best possible service to every patient and never sacrifice quality for any circumstance.

Dr. Melissa Nix is a trusted and compassionate dentist proudly serving the Vestavia Hills, Alabama community. Known for her gentle touch, clinical excellence, and genuine care for her patients, Dr. Nix is passionate about helping people of all ages achieve healthy, confident smiles. She offers comprehensive dental services—including preventive care, cosmetic dentistry, and restorative treatments—tailored to each patient’s unique needs and goals.Dr. Nix is deeply committed to making every visit comfortable and stress-free, creating a warm, welcoming environment where patients feel like family. Her dedication to continuing education and the latest dental techniques ensures her patients receive the highest quality care.
Dr. Nix is a member of Birmingham District Dental Society, the Alabama Dental Association, the American Dental Association. She serves on the executive council of the Birmingham District Dental Society, the Council on Strategic Planning and Leadership Development for the Alabama Dental Association and is co-chairman of the Alabama Dental Association Council for the New Dentist. Dr. Nix volunteers dental services for Donated Dental Services, which serves disabled, elderly, and medically compromised individuals and proofs dental articles for Oakstone Publishing.
Outside of the office, Dr. Nix is actively involved in the Vestavia Hills community and enjoys giving back through local outreach and school programs. She shares her life with her husband, Chris, and their two young boys. As a family, they love spending time outdoors, staying involved in their church and schools, and supporting the vibrant community they call home.

Dr. Nix graduated from Birmingham-Southern College with a bachelor of science degree in Biology/Psychology.

Dr. Nix graduated from the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Dentistry in 2007. She is a member of Omicron Kappa Upsilon dental honor society.

Melissa joined the family business with her aunt, Dr. Davis, at the family Dentistry practice.
Our Staff
Leigh Ann Herron
Leigh Ann is the scheduling coordinator for Nix Family Dentistry. She has been with Dr. Nix since 2015. Leigh Ann enjoys getting to greet our patients, help them with their scheduling needs and handle any concerns they may have. It is her goal to help patients have the most positive experience possible.
Tammy Smith
Tammy is the insurance coordinator for our practice. She has been with this three generation practice since 2006. Tammy helps patients understand their dental insurance coverage and come up with a treatment plan to attain the smile they have always wanted.
Tina Hanks
Tina is a dental assistant for Dr. Nix. She has been in dentistry since 1990 and started working with Dr. Nix in 2020. She loves what she does and her goal is to put anxious patients at ease and helps make their experience less stressful.
Kaelyn Martin
Kaelyn is a dental assistant for Dr. Nix. She has been assisting since 2021. Kaelyn loves meeting new people. She is dedicated to helping provide quality patient care. Kaelyn enjoys learning new things in the dental field and will start the hygiene program soon.
Pam Freeman
Pam received her Bachelor’s Degree in dental hygiene from UAB in 1990. She has worked in dental hygiene for 35 years. Pam worked for Dr. Nix’s aunt, Dr. Jennifer Davis, starting in 2001, then for Dr. Nix when she bought the practice in 2017. With her friendly and caring nature, Pam aims to provide a positive dental experience for patients.
Christy Faulk
Christy has been a dental hygienist since 1995 and with Dr. Nix since 2022. Her favorite thing about her job is helping the patients and truly getting to know them. Christy likes helping fearful patients be as comfortable as they can be to help decrease dental anxiety.
Bridget Rogers
Bridget started working with Dr. Nix in 2023, but has been a hygienist since 1994. She likes knowing that her career allows her to make a difference in her patients’ oral hygiene. Bridget also likes the opportunity to meet people from all walks of life as they come through her chair and learn something new each day.
